Vegnault Grats was writing another missive to his Forebear3 begging to be reassigned out of the Thirteenth Voids. That was when the order arrived.

Some new race called humans had entered the Nagarlim volume. There were spotted in system 109799.

A quick search revealed that 109799 was unsuited to settlement and contained only moderate resources. The humans were in an orbit near body four. 109799-4 was a gas giant with several dangerous moons.

Vegnault Grats was to take the Gaultic Tarn and two other ships to render aid to the humans. They had landed on 109799-4-7. The seventh moon was capable of temperatures as low as 20% beneath the boiling point of H2O and highs of 38% of the way to the boiling point of H2O.

109799-4-7 corrosive saline bodies and simple toxic O2 producing vegetative life. Clearly, these beings were in mortal danger. Except scans indicated that their void craft was fully operational. It looked like they might have landed there deliberately. Some beings needed to be saved from themselves.

Vegnault Grats is the captain of the moderately powerful Gaultic Tarn – the flagship of the Nagarlim’s Thirteenth Voids – a squad established to assign out of date but still valuable ships along with unpopular, incompetent, or untrustworthy officers and crew. The Thirteenth Voids get all the tasks that no one else wants. This includes tedious jobs, suicidal jobs, or tasks that will see them in deep space for many revolutions.
